Sound Healing
Ancient civilizations and indigenous cultures revered sound so deeply that they believed it called the universe into creation. Sound healing can be considered an art and a science, and is built on ancient principles and modern observation of the properties of sound waves. Jonathon Goldman uses the formula:
Sonic frequency + intention = healing
Sound healing techniques involve creating sound waves and harmonic vibrations toward the physical and subtle bodies using sound instruments and also the voice.
Principles of sound healing
-
Frequency is the number of complete cycles of repetition per second that an object oscillates (vibrates) and is measured in Hertz. Sound is an oscillating wave, but it has a broad range of frequencies.
-
Resonance is the specific frequency in which an object vibrates. Every object has a resonant frequency.
-
Entrainment occurs when the powerful vibrations of one object begin to change the vibrations of another, causing the second object to synchronise vibration with the first.
-
Harmonics the colours of the rainbow combine to make white light. Harmonics are related notes that combine to form what we hear as a single pitch. Sound healers utilise harmonics to enhance healing and meditation which naturally helps to reduce stress. You can read more about how this works in this interview with Jonathan Goldman.

Benefits
Sound has the extraordinary ability to bring about change, and can be used alongside any other approach to healing or improving health and happiness. Recipients of sound healing reported that the techniques:
+ Promote a deep sense of wellbeing, and relaxation within body, mind and spirit
+ Reduce stress and induce calmness
+ Balance the nervous system and harmonise hemispheres of the brain
+ Can deepen experience of meditation and enable heightened consciousness
+ Both energises and enhances feelings of inner peace and harmony.
The Instruments
Intent is very important and is tailored to suit the needs of the client in each individual session.
After forming the intent, the instruments are then played intuitively.
![]() Singing BowlsFormed into bowls with hundreds of hammer blows by Tibetan Buddhist monks chanting prayers into the seven metals. | ![]() GongsI'm priveledged to be able to share the sounds of the Chinese Wind Gong and a beautiful 32" Paiste Symphonic Gong. The Gong is one of the world's oldest therapeutic and transformational tools. It has both a relaxing and a rejuvinating effect. | ![]() Tuning forksModern sound tools based on ancient sound principles, including: Pythagorian tuning forks in the interval ratio 2:3. Listening to this interval (‘the perfect fifth’) is relaxing and balancing and is considered the most harmonious musical relationship that exists. Set of chakra balancing tuning forks. Otto fork for skeletal rebalancing. |

![]() Crystal Singing BowlUnique to Crystal Singing Bowls are what are known as vocal formants. Formants are the elements of sound in vowels that make them sound the way they do. They are excellent tools for creating natural binaural beats. When played or struck with intention, the shape of the Crystal Bowls give the natural binaural sound beat tones that are similar to the voice, and have an effect that has been shown to to bring the mind into a meditative peaceful state. | ![]() Bodhran DrumAn ancient tool that is here used in a modern context that uses rhythm to promote healing effects. The drumbeat can help us to draw into alignment with our own heartbeat and has been shown to bring us into a deeper state of relaxation and centredness with our own rhythms. I use a Bodhran drum (honouring my Celtic heritage), chosen for its handcrafted and fine wood quality, and is played intuitively. | ![]() PercussionIncludes Koshi Chimes, Tingsha, Rainstick and Thunder Drum |
![]() VoiceUsing the voice for sound healing is called toning, and is one of the oldest and most natural form of sound healing in existence. Toning is the sound of elongated vowels such as Ah and Om. Also using overtoning - vocal harmonics. | ![]() SilenceBefore there was sound, there was silence - all sound arises from silence and returns back to the silence. |
